January 2023: ABB India has recently announced that its Plant 1 located at Satpur MIDC, Nashik has received the Platinum-rated Green Factory Building certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). This factory is the first to receive this certification in the Nashik Industrial estate which is home to over 10,000 factories across industries. Being in operation since 1978, this factory consists of more than 15 product lines catering to multiple sectors and exports to over 120 countries globally. Without disrupting its on-going operations, this legacy plant had to overcome multiple challenges while implementing green solutions to become sustainable and energy efficient.

This Platinum IGBC certification recognizes the facility’s green measures resulting in reduced water consumption by 30 percent and meeting 28 percent energy cost savings. Around 30 percent of the facility’s total energy consumption needs are met through an onsite solar system and 70 percent through international renewable energy certified sources. Thus, making it 100 percent RE compliant. Spread across 12 acres within ABB’s Nashik campus, this site is equipped with building and energy management systems for enhancing energy performance with state-of-the-art monitoring and analysis platform developed by ABB.

The facility meets 75 percent of its lighting requirements using natural light. It uses fully CFC-free refrigerants in its building ventilation & air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment and unitary air-conditioners. It also has a rainwater harvesting system capturing up to 100 percent of rainwater and an in-house sewage treatment plant. The site’s heat resistant roofs help reduce the heat island effect. It utilizes a contracted fleet of EVs within Nasik for transportation purposes. The plant is also a ‘single-use plastic free’ facility as certified by CII.

“Globally, industries are major consumers of energy leading to high carbon emissions. Hence, sustainable and energy-efficient manufacturing facilities are key to creating a greener value chain in the ecosystem”, said Ganesh Kothawade, Senior Vice President, Electrification Business, ABB India. “With this certification we are proud to become green partners for our customers and other stakeholders, which is in line with our aim to achieve carbon neutrality across operations.”

The Platinum certification is the highest rating offered by IGBC after evaluating a site on innovation in design and various environmental categories. ABB India’s Nashik plant 1 received this recognition for its efforts in upgrading its existing infrastructure to a sustainable and eco-efficient site. With its global 2030 sustainability strategy, ABB is actively enabling a low-carbon society as well as working with its customers and suppliers to implement sustainable practices across its value chain and the lifecycle of its products and solutions. ABB India aims to satisfy long-term sustainability targets of zero waste to landfill with its waste management efforts.
