October 2026 : Ashok Leyland has recently appointed Umang Sharma as Head of Battery Pack. Taking charge of end-to-end battery operations, Sharma will oversee technology strategy, system architecture, product safety, testing, and manufacturing industrialisation for electric vehicles (EVs) and stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The appointment aligns with Ashok Leyland’s aggressive push into zero-emission commercial transport, where high-density, cost-competitive, and safe power packs remain pivotal to scale. Sharma brings a technology-first, execution-oriented approach to lead everything from simulation, homologation, and assembly-line design to design-to-cost initiatives and team capability development.

Prior to his current role, Sharma led R&D and engineering at Tata AutoComp Gotion Green Energy Solutions. His industry footprint also includes key leadership responsibilities at Exide Energy Solutions Limited and an extensive nine-year tenure at Tata Chemicals, handling EV battery sizing, testing, and infrastructure setup.

Sharma is an alumnus of Birla Vishwakarma Mahavidyalaya, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering.
