We believe that 90 percent of the preventive maintenance should be done by the person who is operating that machine. We work on the concept of ‘I operate, I maintain’, says Sunil Beloshe, Assistant VP, Operation, Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co

There are multiple technologies available for improving maintenance performance. These include AI, condition based monitoring (CBM), sensors, and so on. We also have multiple analytical tools available to ensure safety. However, we need to revisit all these options with respect to their usability as well as with respect to the overall business goals. When we look at the maintenance of any equipment or machine, we need to look at enhancing its capabilities and capacities besides enhancing its life. So when we are looking at the overall operations and maintenance cost then all these aspects also need to be taken into account. The selection of technology for improving maintenance must take into account all these factors. Today, we are primarily looking at CBM. That is what we focus on at our organization as well. Ours is a TPM award winning organization and over the journey of the last seven years we have also focussed on preventive maintenance. We believe that 90 percent of the preventive maintenance should be done by the person who is operating that machine. We work on the concept of ‘I operate, I maintain’. Therefore, we have up-skilled the operators from operating the machine to maintaining the machine.
