May 2026 : Mahinda & Mahinda has recently revealed a staggering milestone in its journey toward becoming a global R&D powerhouse: its patent portfolio has expanded by more than 20x over the last decade. From a modest 56 granted patents in FY16, the company has surged to an impressive 1,334 patents as of FY26.
The efficiency of their R&D teams is perhaps the most striking part of the story. Ten years ago, the conversion rate of patent applications to grants was a mere 8%. Fast forward to today, and that rate has climbed to over 65%. It’s a testament to a "Make in India" spirit that prioritizes quality and high-impact innovation over mere volume.
Walking through the numbers, the focus is clearly split between the roads and the fields. Of the 1,334 granted patents, 60% are dedicated to the Automotive Business, while 40% fuel the Farm Business. By merging traditional engineering with cutting-edge electronics - including filings from its subsidiary, Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd - M&M is building a "technologically immersive experience" for its customers.
But beyond the data, there is a human story of persistence. Winning accolades like the CII IP Award for the Best Patent Portfolio and being named one of India’s Top 50 Innovative Companies 2025 isn't accidental. It represents a decade of engineers and designers pushing boundaries to solve real-world problems. As M&M continues to lead in farm equipment and utility vehicles, this growing intellectual property "heft" ensures that the next generation of Mahindra products will be smarter, greener, and more resilient than ever before.
