"Visibility and traceability are essential, especially when dealing with issues like product recalls. The digital battery passport is set to become a key tool in promoting sustainability and circularity in electric mobility." — Ajoy Lall, Sr. Vice President, Manufacturing, Altigreen Propulsion Labs

September 2024 : In the rapidly evolving field of electric mobility, visibility and traceability are becoming increasingly critical, particularly as regulations tighten and consumer expectations rise. Ajoy Lall, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing at Altigreen Propulsion Labs, shares his experiences in leveraging advanced technologies to enhance these aspects, drawing from his extensive background in both traditional automotive and the new age of electric vehicles.

Lall emphasizes the vital role of traceability in managing product recalls and maintaining quality. "Visibility and traceability are essential, especially when dealing with issues like product recalls. It's crucial to be able to narrow down to the specific batch that might have caused the problem," Lall explains.

However, the concept of traceability is evolving, particularly in the context of electric vehicles. "A key development is the introduction of the digital product passport, especially for batteries," Lall notes. This passport will document the entire lifecycle of a battery—from the components used in its manufacture to the sustainability practices employed and how the battery can be repurposed across different applications.

The digital battery passport aligns with upcoming EU regulations focused on circularity and sustainability, where the objective is to ensure that batteries can be used multiple times across various applications, promoting a more sustainable future. "By 2026, this will be a regulation in the EU, and we will need to catch up," says Lall, highlighting the growing importance of this traceability tool in achieving broader sustainability goals.
