August 2025 : In a landmark event recently, the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated two key manufacturing facilities in Gujarat, signaling a significant leap forward for India's automotive sector. The Prime Minister commemorated the start of production for Maruti Suzuki’s first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA, and the commencement of lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing at TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Gujarat Private Limited.
The new e VITARA is slated to become the largest mass-produced and exported electric vehicle from India, with plans to serve over 100 countries. This vehicle is built on a freshly designed, EV-only platform, which distinguishes it from converted internal combustion engine vehicles that often compromise on design. This move embodies the spirit of "Make in India; Make for the World," combining Suzuki’s global technology with India’s manufacturing expertise.
The second milestone is the start of lithium-ion battery cell and electrode manufacturing. This facility, a subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki, is the first company in India to achieve electrode-level localization, a critical step toward boosting self-reliance in battery production for hybrid electric vehicles. These batteries are currently integrated into the hybrid system of the popular Grand Vitara SUV, playing a crucial role in increasing the proliferation of hybrid vehicles in the country.
The event was also attended by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Bhupendra Patel and the Ambassador of Japan to India, H.E. Mr. Keiichi Ono, highlighting the strong collaborative ties behind these projects.
These dual achievements mark a significant commitment by Suzuki and Maruti Suzuki to the Indian government's ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. They represent not only a major step in the push for green mobility but also a strategic move to establish India as a global hub for electric vehicle manufacturing and battery technology.
