September 2026 : Step into any modern automotive plant, and you will hear a different kind of roar. It isn't just the rhythmic heavy hum of stamping presses or robotic arms; it’s the invisible cascade of gigabytes streaming off thousands of shopfloor sensors every single second.

At the 4th Edition of the ACMA Automotive Smart Manufacturing Think Turf 2026, powered by Pro MFG Media, the industry’s brightest minds gathered under a clear mandate: Transforming Mobility: Innovation, Integration, and Impact. But among the high-level discussions on smart factories and Industry 4.0, a panel titled "From Data to Decisions: Capitalizing on Advanced Technology for Plant Performance" got straight down to brass tacks.

The core takeaway? Modern plants aren't starved of data. They are drowning in it.

As panelist Manjunath Prasad, Vice President - ITS at TVS Mobility, pointed out during a fiery exchange with moderator Sunil David, the sheer volume of shopfloor telemetry has become an operational friction point.

"There’s an overflow of data nowadays," Prasad noted. "Sensors send us so much information that not everything is usable. We have to segregate the right data first. Otherwise, it’s simply garbage in, garbage out. To get quality operational decisions, you must feed the system quality data."

Converting raw telemetry into measurable KPIs like Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), energy reduction, and throughput requires a ruthless filtering process. Without smart segregation at the edge, plant analytics become noisy, expensive, and counterproductive.

The discussion shifted rapidly from data hygiene to operational risk. In an ecosystem where IT and Operational Technology (OT) are converging, the traditional concept of an air-gapped factory floor is rapidly disappearing.

Reflecting on recent high-profile ransomware attacks that shut down global automotive assembly lines for weeks, Prasad urged leaders to stop viewing cybersecurity as a late-stage add-on.

  • • Conceptual Integration: Security must be built into the architectural concept from day one - a true "Security by Design" approach.
  • • Scalable Resilience: Cyber threats evolve daily; systems must be dynamic enough to patch new vulnerabilities without halting line production.
  • •The Double-Edged Weapon: AI is currently being weaponized by attackers and deployed by defenders simultaneously. As Prasad put it bluntly: "AI has become a word where whether you use it or not, you’re in danger. You just have to evolve with it."

Technology without human alignment is dead weight. Address the shopfloor workforce, and you immediately run into the friction between technological pace and human fear.

While younger, digital-native generations absorb new digital tools effortlessly, earlier generations often face a steep learning curve or anxiety over job security. However, the consensus from the panel was reassuring:

"Just like five years ago people feared the cloud would wipe everything out, the same thing is happening with AI," Prasad concluded. "AI is bound to stay with us. It will assist human beings, but it will never replace us."

To thrive in the age of smart mobility, manufacturing leaders must focus on creating a culture of continuous unlearning and relearning. Technology is no longer an obstacle - it’s the ultimate lever to make human effort simpler, safer, and far more productive.
