Sona Comstar Partners with DENSO in Landmark Electric Powertrain Deal

July 2026 : India’s Sona Comstar and Japan’s DENSO Corporation have signed definitive agreements to form two strategic joint ventures. The partnership brings together DENSO’s world-class electrification tech and Sona Comstar’s agile, cost-effective Indian manufacturing capabilities.

The collaboration splits its focus across vehicle segments to hit both high-voltage and light-mobility demand:

• ● Four-Wheelers & Beyond: A joint venture focused on high-voltage, liquid-cooled traction inverters, traction motors, and generators for passenger and commercial EVs. DENSO will hold a controlling 51% stake, with Sona Comstar holding the remaining 49%.
• ● Two- and Three-Wheelers: Sona Comstar will transfer its existing 2W/3W motor and controller business into a wholly-owned subsidiary via a slump sale. DENSO will acquire a 49% equity stake in that unit at an enterprise value of INR 17,500 million, leaving Sona Comstar with a 51% majority stake. This JV will focus on air-cooled systems and e-Axles.

Both partners will license intellectual property to their respective majority-owned ventures in exchange for royalties.
