July 2026 : The Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) - a flagship laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) - has successfully developed India’s first indigenous Expendable Turbo Jet Engine in the 350 kg thrust class.
The landmark achievement was brought to life through a close public-private partnership with Hyderabad-based Azad Engineering, identified by GTRE as its industry partner for manufacturing and assembly. The engine was successfully realized and delivered to GTRE by Azad Engineering, marking a monumental achievement for India's aerospace and defence ecosystem. The delivery represents the culmination of years of precision engineering, advanced manufacturing, and close partnership between India's scientific and industrial communities.
Mastered by only a handful of nations, jet engine technology is widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated engineering disciplines in the world, demanding exceptional precision, advanced metallurgy, and uncompromising manufacturing standards. Delivering such a complex system based on the design of DRDO reflects the rapidly growing technological capabilities and maturity of the Indian Defence Industry.
The engine was handed over to Distinguished Scientist & Director General (Aeronautical Systems) Dr K Rajalakshmi Menon and Outstanding Scientist and Director GTRE Dr SV Ramanamurty by CEO Azad Engineering Shri Rakesh Chopdar.
This breakthrough marks a major victory for Atmanirbhar Bharat in high-tech defence manufacturing. By successfully bridging national research capability with private sector manufacturing excellence, India is laying a solid, sovereign foundation for next-generation propulsion systems and strategic aerospace applications.
