April 2026 : The transition from observing a process to actively steering it requires a unique blend of strategic foresight and technical mastery. Devanshi Mehta, Deputy General Manager and Group Head of Civil, Structure, and Architectural Engineering, made that leap when she moved from consulting to the heart of manufacturing. Her goal was simple yet ambitious: to own the entire lifecycle of a project, from the initial concept to the final commissioning, and to drive value through engineered solutions.
In this edition of Women Aces of Manufacturing - a year-long initiative by Pro MFG Media - we dive into Devanshi’s journey of breaking ‘confirmation biases’ and her mission to inspire fellow women to step out of their comfort zones. From navigating the complexities of Industry 4.0 to fostering inclusivity through initiatives like Aarti Industries’ NOWA, Devanshi embodies the leadership, innovation, and empathy driving the Indian manufacturing ecosystem into a new era of excellence.
What inspired you to pursue a career in manufacturing?
During my consulting days, I keenly observed the command my counterparts from manufacturing showcased regarding their thorough understanding of the end-to-end process and their ability to provide execution decisions accordingly. This urged me to move to the other side of the table, so I could directly contribute toward Value Engineered solutions. I knew I could gain comprehensive exposure in manufacturing from concept to commissioning and learn the nuances of critical thinking and strategic decision-making.
What is one leadership lesson manufacturing taught you?
Collaboration and alignment among all stakeholders are key to success. Everyone works toward a common goal, but if work occurs in silos or within local boundaries the end result will not meet expectations and requirements. It is imperative for all stakeholders to align with the process and the direction to achieve the desired outcome. It's like a relay race, each one needs to perform their best while also adapting and adjusting with their partners/groups.
Which competencies are most critical to thrive in the evolving digital technologies in manufacturing?
In today's VUCA world, with so much uncertainty and volatility, digitization is the golden word. Adapting and continuous learning of evolving digital technology should come naturally. The aptitude for innovation and out-of-the-box thinking will foster continuous growth and development.
A moment in your career that made you most proud?
I have often felt satisfied creating breakthroughs during complex situations on both technical and strategic fronts. True pride comes from inspiring fellow women colleagues to step out of their comfort zones and go the extra mile to achieve their goals. The confidence within me takes a stride; when I represent diversity and equality in various capacities, both within and outside organization.
What is one misconception about women in manufacturing you would like to break?
It is a misconception that women cannot take the heat, both physically and mentally. The confirmation bias suggests that women in manufacturing would probably be involved in more indirect or supporting functions. I think, at their core women have enough grit, willpower, and commitment to perform any assigned task or role and can deliver wonders. In fact, the sincerity and conviction with which women work are exceptional and beyond description.
What advice would you give young women entering the manufacturing industry today?
Be yourself and realise your inner potential. The manufacturing industry is eager to have you onboard. If you give 100%, the industry will return it manifold. Have in depth knowledge of your work and be open to taking on new challenges/opportunities. Also, work on your emotional quotient for effective multi tasking and building emotional resilience as you move through various phases in your personal and professional lives concurrently.
How do you see the impact of AI in the manufacturing industry?
AI has enabled smart manufacturing with the Industry 4.0 Framework. The advanced analytics provides us real time manufacturing insights through digital twin; it aids in predictive modeling and identifying the golden parameters. It reduces manual effort and provides easy accessibility thereby giving quicker corrective actions. Overall, it has enhanced Productivity, Reliability, Quality ultimately leading to customer satisfaction.
Any initiatives being run in your company for increasing women’s participation in manufacturing?
At Aarti Industries, we have a wonderful initiative launched as NOWA - Network of Women at Aarti; it supports and empowers our women colleagues across all roles and levels through various interventions. NOWA provides open dialogue platforms with leadership; opportunities for continuous learning and innovation; celebrating and publishing internally as well as externally achievements and inspirational stories.
In one sentence: what does being a ‘Woman Ace of Manufacturing’ mean to you?
It gives me a sense of pride and responsibility to continue contributing with the same passion and zeal, maintaining courage and confidence while remaining empathetic and grounded.
