September 2025 : Tata Steel Limited, a leading Indian steel producer, has recently awarded a significant contract to John Cockerill India Limited for a new Push-Pull Pickling Line (PPPL) and an integrated Spray Roaster-Acid Regeneration Plant (ARP) at its Jamshedpur facility. This project is a key step in strengthening Tata Steel's processing capabilities while enhancing environmental sustainability.

The contract encompasses the engineering, design, manufacturing, and supply of all necessary equipment, along with supervision for the erection and commissioning of both the pickling line and the acid regeneration plant. This ensures a seamless integration and optimal performance to meet all contractual guarantees.

State-of-the-Art Pickling Line The new Push-Pull Pickling Line is designed to have an annual capacity of 350,000 tons. It will be capable of processing steel strips up to 1350 mm wide and 3.8 mm thick at a maximum speed of 120 meters per minute. The line's unique V-shaped granite blocks are designed to simplify strip uncoiling, while a two-step acid scrubbing process minimizes acid fumes, creating a safer and cleaner working environment.

Leveraging its extensive global experience with over 150 pickling lines, John Cockerill will equip the facility with a double uncoiler, a stitcher, and three of its specially designed pickling tanks for exceptional efficiency. These features are critical for producing scale-free, clean strips essential for downstream processes like cold rolling and tinplating.

Sustainable and Efficient Acid Regeneration The installation will include an integrated Spray Roaster-ARP with a capacity of 2700 liters per hour. This closed-loop system will regenerate fresh acid from waste pickle liquor, significantly reducing the demand for new acid and lowering operational costs. John Cockerill's proven ARP technology, with over 100 successful installations worldwide, boasts: High Efficiency: Over 99.5 percent acid regeneration, leading to substantial savings. Revenue Generation: The process creates high-purity iron oxide as a by-product, which can be sold for use in industries such as paint manufacturing. Environmental Compliance: The system is designed to meet stringent future emission norms, ensuring a low environmental footprint.

Leadership Statements Mr. Frédéric Martin, Managing Director, John Cockerill India Limited, stated, “This order is a testament to Tata Steel’s trust in our advanced technology and strong engineering expertise. Our solutions will not only enhance production efficiency but also contribute to Tata Steel’s sustainability goals by reducing waste and environmental impact.”

Mr. Kishore Tar, Chief Projects & Construction, Tata Steel Limited, added, “We are committed to advancing sustainable steelmaking and processing practices while enhancing efficiency and quality. This project will help us strengthen operational reliability, reduce environmental impact, and reinforce our leadership in responsible steel production.”

The project will be supported by John Cockerill’s manufacturing facility in Taloja, with automation systems provided by its expert team.
