As a part of its initiative to digitally transform the Indian manufacturing sector, the Department of Heavy Industries under the Govt. of India envisioned the Centre for Industry 4.0 (C4i4) Lab. Based out of Pune University campus, the C4i4 Lab is focused on creating widespread awareness of the fourth industrial revolution across the Indian manufacturing industry.

The C4i4 Lab is a step towards the Govt. of India’s national initiative SAMARTH (Smart Automated Manufacturing and Rapid Transformation Hub) Udyog. It has developed an experience centre demonstrating technological capability. With this initiative, the Govt. of India aims to collaborate with the manufacturing industry, academic institutions, industry associations and technology companies and C4i4 Lab is meant to provide an ecosystem to drive growth and innovation.

As part of celebration of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav (Celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence) by DHI (Department of Heavy Industry) SAMARTH Udyog Centres, C4i4 Lab are conducting a series of four webinars. Pro MFG Media is the exclusive media partner for this talk series.

In the second out of four instalments of the talk series conducted on June 16, we talk about the Global Lighthouse Network program initiative by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The Global Lighthouse Network is a part of the WEF’s ‘Shaping the Future of Advanced Manufacturing and Production’ platform. As on today, more than 70% of the companies are stuck in ”pilot purgatory”, while only a select group of leading manufacturers are able to generate new values and customer experiences within the factory or across the value chains. It is in order to mitigate this gap that the WEF has introduced the Global Lighthouse Network, wherein a select few companies lead the way for the rest of the manufacturing sector to digital transformation.

As a part of his keynote address on the SAMARTH Udyog initiative by C4i4 Lab, WEF Speaker Mr. Frederico Torti, Project Lead- Advance Manufacturing and Production, touched upon many key points regarding the digitalization and transformation of the manufacturing sector at large. He added that Technology Adoption is one of the many priorities under the Advanced Manufacturing and Production Platform. As part of the WEF’s initiatives under technology adoption, the Global Lighthouse Network is succeeded by other initiatives like the Global Smart Industry Readiness Index (SIRI), Biotechnologies for the Future of Manufacturing and Additive Manufacturing 2.0.

Mr. Torti goes on to add that the Global Lighthouse Network has identified as many as 69 sites from across different geographies, industry sectors and company sizes, where 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies have been deployed at scale. Two Indian companies added to the list of Global Lighthouses are Tata Steel and ReNew Power. He further added that by identifying these sites, the Global Lighthouse Network aims to develop cross-company learning and transformation. Stressing upon the value of being a part of the Global Lighthouse Network, he mentioned the below incentives: • Getting recognition
• Attracting top talents
• Influencing policy makers and global conversation around Fourth Industrial Revolution
• Accessing the C-Suite 4 IR Community
• Connecting with technology pioneers, start-ups and early technology adopters
• Collaborating and developing new partnerships on an open knowledge platform
•Benchmarking against the most advanced companies in the world
• Joining the Learning Journey attending workshops and site visits, learning from peers

Towards the end of his address, Mr. Torti emphasized on the newly added lighthouse company Tata Steel, Jamshedpur and its impact on the value chain in terms of FTE productivity, cost to serve customer, and procurement costs.

Stay tuned for updates on the upcoming episodes of the Azaadi ka Amrut Mahotsav Talk series, organized by C4i4 Lab.
