We are delighted to be further enhancing our presence in this important and attractive market with full ownership of Calvert.” - Aditya Mittal, CEO, ArcelorMittal
June 2025 : ArcelorMittal recently announced it has completed the acquisition of Nippon Steel Corporation's (NSC) 50 percent equity stake in AM/NS Calvert. The facility, now officially renamed ArcelorMittal Calvert, is a state-of-the-art flat rolled steel plant in Alabama, with an annual capacity of 5.3 million metric tonnes. ArcelorMittal previously held the balance of the joint venture.
Originally acquired with NSC in 2014, the Calvert facility has seen over $2 billion in capex investments since then, significantly enhancing its operational efficiency and product offerings for the U.S. automotive and energy markets. These improvements include a new state-of-the-art steelmaking facility, commissioned this month, capable of producing 1.5 million metric tonnes of low CO2 steel annually. A new seven-year slab supply agreement with NSC, ensuring domestic supply, has also commenced.
Looking ahead, ArcelorMittal confirmed its plan to invest $1.2 billion in a new non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NOES) manufacturing facility at the Calvert site, set to produce 150,000 metric tonnes annually by 2027. This project aims to bolster U.S. manufacturing competitiveness and reduce reliance on electrical steel imports.
"We are delighted to be further enhancing our presence in this important and attractive market with full ownership of Calvert," said Aditya Mittal, CEO, ArcelorMittal. He emphasized the facility's transformation into a "highly strategic steelmaking asset" capable of producing high-quality, low-carbon-emissions steels, with significant future growth potential.
John Brett, ArcelorMittal North America CEO, added, "Our vision is to establish an ArcelorMittal manufacturing center of excellence in Calvert. The U.S. is well positioned for a strong and revitalized future, and Calvert has a pivotal role to play in supporting that." The company is also assessing the feasibility of further steelmaking expansion at the site.
