April 2023 : The DRDO Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) was inaugurated on April 16, 2023, at IIT Hyderabad to take up futuristic projects towards Long-term Directed Research needed for DRDO. The journey of DRDO collaboration with IITH started in 2020 with a DRDO Research cell which has been transformed into a Centre of Excellence as DIA CoE. This centre was inaugurated by Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, at Technology Research Park, IIT Hyderabad, in the presence of Dr BHVS Narayana Murthy, DS, Director General (MSS), Hari Babu Srivastava, OS, Director General (TM), Vedveer Arya, IDAS, Addl FA & JS, Kailash Kumar Pathak, Sc G, Director, DFTM, and Directors of DRDO Labs - RCI, DRDL, DMRL, DSP, CAS, DSTA along with Prof B S Murty, Director IITH and Dr G Ramaguru, Director DIA-CoE, IITH. Programme Directors of Missile Complex, Senior Scientists from DRDO Labs and the Faculty of IITH participated in the event.

Dr G Ramaguru, Director DIA-CoE, IITH, delivered the welcome address, Prof. B.S Murty delivered the special address, Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary DDR&D & Chairman DRDO, delivered the inaugural address and the programme ended with the vote-of-thanks delivered by Mitalee Agrawal, PRO, IITH.

There are seven verticals of technology projects that will be undertaken at DIA-CoE at IITH:
1. Ultra-High Temperature materials
2. Additive manufacturing,
3. Space Technologies,
4. AI for defence,
5. Image processing,
6. Seekers and Homing Technologies,
7. Nano-ornithocopter Technologies.

Delivering the special address, Prof B S Murty, Director, IITH, said, “This centre is a major step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in the Defence sector. I am happy that this CoE will take shape under the leadership of Dr Ramaguru, Director of this CoE, who has a lot of experience in managing strategic projects. I am looking forward to the faculty of IITH working together with industry on DRDO problems to make India a global leader in each of the verticals assigned to the CoE.”
