June 2026 : In a recent development for the future of transportation, IIT Madras is joining hands with global tire manufacturing giant Goodyear to turn everyday tires into intelligent data hubs that could redefine vehicle safety. By bringing elite academic research and frontline manufacturing together under one roof, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is now a Member of the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Automotive Research (CAAR), Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
This relationship targets critical, high-tech components of tomorrow's smart vehicles, shifting focus away from traditional mechanics toward deeply integrated software systems. As IIT Madras highlights, "This partnership marks an important step toward strengthening industry-academia collaboration in areas such as tire intelligence, vehicle dynamics, simulation, control systems, ADAS development, and future mobility technologies."
The ultimate value of this science lies in how it seamlessly translates complex algorithmic data into real-world utility for everyday commuters and commercial fleets alike. The research teams aim at developing technologies that can assess tyre condition in real time and provide actionable inputs to drivers, fleet operators, and ADAS systems for optimized steering, braking, vehicle control, and predictive maintenance scheduling.
Looking ahead, this union sets a brand new benchmark for how corporate giants and academic centers can co-create the infrastructure of safer highways.
