April 2026 : For the Indian industrial landscape, two of the world's most formidable steel giants are joining forces. On April 17, 2026, the Board of Directors of JSW Steel Limited approved a landmark Joint Venture (JV) agreement with South Korea’s POSCO Group. This strategic alliance centers on Saffron Resources Private Limited, currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of JSW, which will transition into a 50:50 joint venture between the two powerhouses.

The heartbeat of this partnership is an ambitious 6 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum) integrated steel plant to be built from the ground up in Odisha. The project leverages JSW’s deep-rooted Indian operational expertise alongside POSCO’s world-renowned technological prowess. Saffron Resources already holds a significant footprint for this dream, possessing 887 acres of land in Odisha - a mix of freehold and leasehold plots - ready to be transformed into a hub of high-grade manufacturing.

Beyond the brick and mortar, this deal is a meeting of minds. POSCO Group will subscribe to shares in Saffron for a consideration of approximately INR 508.8 crore. The collaboration is designed to be a true partnership of equals, with both JSW and POSCO holding the right to appoint an equal number of directors. For JSW, which aims to hit a 50 MTPA capacity in India by FY31, the rationale is clear.

The transaction is expected to be completed by December 31, 2026. By blending the cultural and industrial strengths of India and South Korea, this JV isn't just about pouring molten iron; it’s about crafting the high-grade materials that will drive the next generation of Indian automotive and infrastructure growth.
