“The agreement with ITOCHU is a significant step in translating L&T’s clean energy ambitions into large-scale, bankable projects. By securing long-term demand through a reputed global partner like ITOCHU, we are strengthening the commercial foundation of our green ammonia platform, while contributing meaningfully to global decarbonisation.” - Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director & President - L&T

April 2026 : L&T Energy GreenTech (LTEGL) has inked a massive deal with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to supply 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia per annum. This isn't just a corporate contract; it’s a blueprint for how two nations can collaborate to scrub carbon from the world’s most stubborn shipping lanes.

Stepping into the sunlight at ITOCHU’s Tokyo headquarters, leaders from both firms moved beyond the "planning" phase of their 2025 development agreement into a hard-hitting commercial reality. By securing a long-term "take-or-pay" deal, L&T is effectively turning its proposed facility in Kandla, Gujarat, into a vital artery for the global energy transition. For the maritime world, this means a reliable stream of fuel that doesn't cost the earth.

ITOCHU plans to channel this Indian-made ammonia into its flourishing green bunkering network, specifically targeting hubs like Singapore. As one of the world’s busiest maritime crossroads, Singapore’s pivot to ammonia could set a domino effect in motion across the shipping industry.

The weight of the moment was captured by Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director & President - L&T, who noted: “The agreement with ITOCHU is a significant step in translating L&T’s clean energy ambitions into large-scale, bankable projects. By securing long-term demand through a reputed global partner like ITOCHU, we are strengthening the commercial foundation of our green ammonia platform, while contributing meaningfully to global decarbonisation.”

Echoing this sentiment, Hiroyuki Tsubai, Executive Vice President at ITOCHU, emphasized the logistical necessity of the deal: “Establishing a reliable and scalable supply of green ammonia is critical to accelerating its adoption as marine fuel. Our partnership with LTEGL provides a strong and credible supply base, enabling us to expand our bunkering business and support the shipping industry’s transition towards low-carbon operations.”
