The pharmaceutical sector demands that cargo be moved with precision, reliability, and accountability at every step of the supply chain." - Thomas Theeuwes, Managing Director - Maersk South Asia
May 2026 : In the fast-paced world of life sciences, every degree of temperature and every hour on the clock matters. Recognizing this, Maersk has officially flagged off a pioneering weekly reefer rail service, creating a high-tech "cold-chain corridor" between the pharmaceutical heart of Hyderabad and the Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai. This is a specialized lifeline for India’s pharmaceutical exporters who have long sought a more reliable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional road transport.
Built in a powerhouse partnership with CONCOR (Container Corporation of India), the service is designed to move 40-foot refrigerated containers on a fixed, predictable schedule. For manufacturers, this means an unbroken cold chain where "pre-trip inspection (PTI) compliance and quality-aligned container selection are built into every shipment." By shifting cargo from the highway to the tracks, the initiative is also a win for the planet, projected to slash greenhouse gas emissions by up to 3,000 tonnes annually.
The human element of this logistics feat lies in its simplicity for the shipper. Under a single-window arrangement, Maersk takes full accountability - handling everything from inland rail and ocean freight to complex documentation and last-mile trucking at the destination. It’s a comprehensive "end-to-end" embrace that allows scientists and manufacturers to focus on medicine while Maersk focuses on the move.
The strategic importance of this move cannot be overstated. As Thomas Theeuwes, Managing Director, Maersk South Asia, puts it: "India is central to Maersk’s global growth ambitions, and we are committed to building logistics infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of the Indian industry. The pharmaceutical sector demands that cargo be moved with precision, reliability, and accountability at every step of the supply chain." He further noted that the solution "would not have been possible without the steadfast support of CONCOR," adding that together, they are "setting a new benchmark for pharmaceutical logistics in India."
