September 2026 : Stellantis has assumed full ownership of Stellantis Automobiles India Private Limited (SAIPL), acquiring the remaining stake held by Hindustan Motor Finance Corporation Ltd. (HMFCL), a CK Birla Group company. The Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)-funded transaction gives Stellantis complete operational control over its key manufacturing hub in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu.
The milestone caps a long-term manufacturing partnership with the CK Birla Group established in 2017. Since vehicle assembly commenced in 2021, the Thiruvallur plant has emerged as a cornerstone of Stellantis’ regional operations, producing the Citroën C3, ë-C3, C3 Aircross, and Basalt with over 95% localization.
To date, Stellantis has poured over €1 billion (approx. ₹11,000 crore) into building its Indian manufacturing, engineering, and export footprint. With full ownership streamlining governance and boosting operational agility, the company has set aggressive growth targets: ramping annual production by over 160% - from 16,000 units in 2026 to more than 43,000 units by 2028. This expansion is expected to more than double the facility's direct shopfloor workforce of 610 while expanding exports across eight international markets.
Commenting on the acquisition, Shailesh Hazela, CEO and Managing Director, Stellantis India, said: "India remains a key pillar of Stellantis' growth strategy. Having invested close to INR 11,000 crore in the country to build a strong manufacturing, engineering and export ecosystem, we continue to see significant opportunities ahead. This milestone will enable greater integration and enhance our ability to respond more quickly to customer and market needs."
He added: "As we look ahead, we are committed to driving growth through new product investments, expanded manufacturing capacity, stronger export competitiveness and deeper localisation. India is playing an increasingly important role within Stellantis' global network, and we see significant potential to further scale our operations and contribution to the country's industrial growth."
