January 2026 : In a significant boost to India’s green mobility mission, Alstom has bagged a 5-year comprehensive maintenance contract for 300 high-powered WAG-12B electric locomotives. The agreement, valued at €62 million, was inked through Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL), Alstom’s strategic joint venture with Indian Railways.

The contract focuses on the Sabarmati depot in Gujarat, where Alstom will manage the upkeep of the final 300 units from the landmark 800-locomotive order placed in 2015. This agreement ensures that the super-powered, 12,000 HP locomotives - capable of hauling 6,000 tonnes - remain at peak performance until February 2031.

To maximize uptime, the contract utilizes Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance framework. This includes: Remote Diagnostics & Logistics - Real-time monitoring to predict and prevent failures. Prompt Response Teams (PRT) - Specialized units stationed at strategic locations, armed with critical spares to tackle issues on the move. Infrastructure Support - Maintenance of the Sabarmati depot’s essential facilities and eco-friendly locomotive washing.

This new setup complements existing operations at Alstom’s ultramodern depots in Saharanpur (UP) and Nagpur (Maharashtra), which already service the first 500 locomotives of the fleet.

"It is an honour to be Indian Railways’ partner of choice again, as it is reflective of the legacy established by MELPL and Alstom. Over the last decade we have worked collaboratively with the IR organization in supporting their freight revolution vision. We are thrilled to be trusted, for our remarkable maintenance capabilities and our reliability and availability track record," said Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India.

Beyond machinery, the deal emphasizes human capital. Alstom will continue its extensive skill development programme, which has already trained over 22,000 Indian Railways staff to date. As India transitions toward a digital and low-carbon future, these Prima T8 locomotives remain the backbone of a faster, cleaner, and more efficient freight network.
