March 2026 : The dusty landscape of Rajayyapeta was transformed today into a symbol of India’s industrial future. In a high-profile ceremony humming with the energy of thousands of spectators, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) officially laid the foundation stone for its massive 8.2 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant.
The event was a rare gathering of political and industrial titans. Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Steel Minister Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy joined Lakshmi Mittal and Aditya Mittal to signal the start of a project that promises to redefine the region’s economy. With an investment exceeding ₹70,000 crore, the plant is expected to generate a staggering one lakh direct and indirect jobs.
For Lakshmi Mittal, Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, the project is deeply personal. Celebrating five decades in the industry, he remarked: "Today marks the next chapter in our partnership with India, one built on shared ambition and enduring trust. I have been in the steel industry now for fifty years, and I can honestly say that what we are building here in India is one of the highlights of these 50 years."
The facility isn't just about scale; it’s about sophistication. Designed to be one of the most competitive coastal plants in the world, it will leverage a slurry pipeline to connect directly to India's richest iron-ore belts.
The plant is a critical piece of the puzzle for India’s goal to reach 300 MTPA of crude steel capacity by 2030. Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, emphasized the strategic advantage of the location: "Steel is the fabric of life, and we are proud to have the opportunity to contribute to expanding India’s steel capabilities with this amazing new plant, which will be one of the most competitive, modern facilities in the country."
Beyond manufacturing, AM/NS India is investing in the people of Andhra Pradesh. The company signed MoUs to establish a talent ecosystem through NAMTECH, ensuring the local workforce is ready for the high-tech roles of tomorrow. With operations slated to begin in early 2029, Rajayyapeta is well on its way to becoming a global hub for "Smarter Steels."
