October 2025 : India’s power sector has reached two "historic milestones," demonstrating the nation's rapid strides toward a clean, secure, and self-reliant energy future, according to a statement released by PIB Delhi.
As of September 30, 2025, the country’s total installed electricity capacity has surpassed the 500 GW mark, reaching a total of 500.89 GW. Even more significantly, non-fossil fuel sources (including renewable energy, hydro, and nuclear) now account for 51% of the total capacity, totaling 256.09 GW. This effectively means India has achieved one of its major COP26 Panchamrit goals- to have 50% of installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030- five years ahead of schedule.
The clean energy growth rate is evident in the current fiscal year's additions: 28 GW of non-fossil capacity was added between April and September 2025, compared to only 5.1 GW of fossil-fuel capacity. Within the renewable mix, Solar power leads with 127.33 GW, followed by Wind power at 53.12 GW.
Green Generation Record- A single-day record further underscored this shift on July 29, 2025. On this day, renewable sources met 51.5% of the country's total electricity demand of 203 GW. This was the first time that more than half of India’s power demand came from green sources in a single day. The day's generation break-up included: Solar: 44.50 GW, Wind: 29.89 GW and Hydro: 30.29 GW.
This achievement signals a successful clean energy transition that is also creating new employment opportunities in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and innovation. The Ministry of Power and MNRE commended all stakeholders for the "collective effort" in stabilizing the grid while accelerating this massive renewable push.
