January 2025 : Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of Textiles, inaugurated the state-of-the-art permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) in Fulia, West Bengal. The campus, built on 5.38 acres with an investment of INR ₹75.95 crores, features modern infrastructure, including smart classrooms, a digital library, and advanced testing laboratories.
The institute aims to be a Centre of Excellence in handloom and textile technology, serving students from West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Sikkim. The intake capacity for first-year admissions has been doubled from 33 to 66, offering enhanced opportunities for the children of handloom weavers to gain skills and contribute to the industry.
Mr. Singh emphasized the government's efforts to uplift handloom weavers through various textile ministry schemes. He highlighted the institute's role in promoting sustainability in handloom crafts, utilizing flax and linen as raw materials, and collaborating with NIFT Kolkata for design innovation.
The minister reiterated the textile ministry's commitment to achieving a USD $300 billion market size and creating 6 crore jobs in the textile value chain by 2030, positioning India's handloom sector for global recognition.
